When can a tree be felled?

We are able to fell trees in areas where we are able to control the direction of the tree’s path, where there is clear, open space. Where there is not the required clear space, dismantling the tree can be an alternative option.

When is tree felling necessary?

There are many reasons why you might need to remove a tree from your property, such as:

  • Dead or diseased trees: Dead or diseased trees pose a safety hazard and can attract pests and diseases to other trees.

  • Storm damage: Trees that have been damaged by storms can become unstable and pose a risk to people and property.

  • Overcrowding: If your trees are too close together, they can compete for resources and become unhealthy.

  • Construction projects: If you are planning to build on your property, you may need to remove trees that are in the way.

Can a tree be felled if it has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?

If a tree has a TPO, it cannot be felled without written permission from your local council.

If a tree with a TPO is felled without permission, you could be fined or even prosecuted. These penalties can be severe so it’s important to ensure you seek professional advice and ensure you are following the law.

We are able to make applications on your behalf where there are strong grounds for removal such as where the tree is dead, dying or dangerous.

This cherry tree in Dedham, Essex was removed due to decay within the stem. The main stem was left as a monolith pole to provide habitat for insects and wildlife.
